Our programs assemble a multi-disciplinary group of thought leaders, recognizing that powerful learning and innovation often come from combining disparate skills, and that advances in sustainability require systems-oriented thinking. Likely professions for each program are listed below. 

Sustainability in the Urban Built Environment

  • Developers

City Teams: The program is particularly interested in enrolling ‘city teams’ of professionals from a given city or metropolitan region. These teams will learn together, and then take their shared experience and tools back to their home city with the critical mass to take action. Teams can qualify for a discount (up to 5 participants for the price of 3) if they satisfy the following criteria:

  • At least 1 public sector participant involved in the built environment (an elected official, city planner, or development officer) 
  • At least 1 professional from the development or investment community (such as an owner, developer or developer/builder)
  • At least 1 professional from the design community (architect or engineer)
  • Up to 2 other participants (from construction, transit, natural resources, public health, academia, and other fields)

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

  • Farmers
  • Ranchers
  • Food processors
  • Food retailers
  • Farmers market organizers
  • Restaurateurs
  • Equipment providers
  • Researchers and professors
  • Environmental experts
  • Lawyers

Regional Teams: In addition to individuals, the program is encouraging participation from ‘regional teams’ of professionals from a given region outside of Oregon. These teams will learn together and take their shared knowledge back to their region with the support necessary to put their plans into action. Teams can qualify for a discount (up to 5 participants for the price of 3) if they satisfy the following criteria:

  • 3-5 individuals from a given region outside of Oregon
  • At least 1 producer (farmer, rancher)
  • At least 1 distribution channel representative (retailer, processor, market organizer)
  • At least 1 public sector or extension service participant
  • Up to 2 other participants

Date: June 22-26, 2009

Costs (for either program)

  • $3,900 per professional applying by Feb. 28, 2009 ($4,200 after Feb. 28, 2009)
  • $11,700 per qualified city or regional team of 3-5 participants applying by Feb. 28, 2009 ($12,600 after Feb. 28, 2009)
  • Lunch and local travel included.
  • Hotel discounts will be arranged.

Students

For either program, students must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary education program, or have completed a program in the past 12 months. This includes graduate students, recent graduates headed into their professions or into graduate programs, and select undergraduates headed into their senior year. The most common areas of interest are:

Sustainability in the Urban Built Environment

  • Architecture: Students who would like more green building depth than their program currently offers.
  • Engineering and Civil Engineering: Students interested in the growing opportunities in buildings and infrastructure required to improve sustainability.
  • MBA: Students interested in understanding investment, real estate, product or other strategic opportunities.
  • Law, public policy and urban planning: Students who see the significant planning and policy issues driven by the need for sustainability in the built environment.

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

  • Agriculture and Environmental Science: Students looking to see live examples of how their science fits into the full value chain.
  • Natural Resources: Students looking for conservation successes and new ideas.
  • Chefs and Restaurant Management: Students looking at new relationship structures that reinforce success.
  • MBA: Students uncovering the market opportunities at many points in the system.
  • Law and public policy: Students pursuing examples of policy wins, mistakes, and on-going gaps.
